Dermal Fillers

Add Volume to Minimize Wrinkles in Nashville

SKINCARE

Young skin has a thick and elastic quality, which is why it looks smooth and snaps easily back into place after it is pulled from its resting position. As time goes on, however, intrinsic aging and external stressors—like the sun, gravity, and air pollution—cause the skin to develop a more paper-like and fragile texture, as well laxity so that it pulls away from the underlying layers and sags.

To counter these changes, many people choose facial fillers, also sometimes referred to as soft tissue fillers or dermal fillers, which offer convenience, affordability, and long-lasting results. The dermal fillers at Nashville Plastic Surgery Institute provide patients with a more natural appearance by quickly restoring the skin to a more youthful state without incisions, anesthesia, or scars.

More About Dermal Fillers

As we age, our skin gradually declines in its ability to produce elastin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid. Collagen and elastin are proteins interwoven into the dermis to help support the skin’s structure and keep our skin tight and firm. Hyaluronic acid is an important molecule that helps to moisturize the skin by attracting and binding to water. Together with collagen, this also provides added volume to the skin.

As the production of these helpful agents diminishes over time, so too does the quality and youthful glow of our skin. Eventually, our skin also starts to loosen and sag, which causes static wrinkles to develop. These lines are frequently accompanied by hollowed areas around the face, leading to an overall weathered, tired, and even gaunt look.

Dermal fillers are designed to correct these signs of aging without the need for more invasive and costly surgical techniques. Injectable dermal fillers work by addressing soft-tissue volume loss and filling out thinned and hollowed areas of the face.

As nonsurgical treatments, dermal fillers are made up of synthetic or naturally derived substances and injected to the area below the skin to reduce the depth of wrinkles, lines, and creases, as well as to sculpt more youthful contours. They can also be used to fill in scars and depressions from acne. Moreover, many of the fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which is often included in topical products to moisturize the skin.

Regardless of the brand of dermal fillers you decide on, these injectable treatments generally take no longer than 15 minutes to administer. Treatment sessions can be completed during your lunch hour.

The effects of dermal fillers can generally be seen right away, and they require no recovery time.

What Can Dermal Fillers Treat?

Dermal fillers correct moderate to severe static wrinkles and other signs of aging that occur on the center and lower areas of the face. Some of the most common concerns dermal fillers are used for include nasolabial folds between the nose and mouth, marionette lines, and sunken cheeks. They are also used for lip augmentation, enhancing mid-face contours, and sculpting the jawline area.

Types of Dermal Fillers

Many of the most well-known dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid as their key ingredient. This is a natural sugar that is found in all living organisms, though synthetic forms of hyaluronic acid have been created and used for a variety of purposes over the last several decades. High concentrations of this clear, gel-like substance are found in soft connective tissue, cartilage, joints, and skin, where it provides cushioning and moisture. The dermal fillers that are comprised of hyaluronic acid are JUVEDERM® Ultra XC and Ultra Plus XC, JUVEDERM VOLUMA® XC, Restylane®, and RHA®.

Ultra and Ultra Plus

The difference between Ultra XC and Ultra Plus is mostly the viscosity and consistency. Ultra Plus is a thicker and more robust formulation, which helps it last longer as it reduces medium-depth creases and enhances the lips.

VOLUMA®

VOLUMA® XC is an FDA-approved injectable that adds volume to the midface, providing a subtle lift and helping restore a younger profile. The entire JUVEDERM® family of hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers provide a smooth correction of wrinkles that has been known to last for more than a year from the initial treatment.

Restylane®

Restylane® is another collection of FDA-approved hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers. Each of the fillers in this collection is designed to treat different areas of the face, from around the mouth to below the eyes.

RHA®

The RHA® collection of dermal fillers from Revance® focuses on wrinkles that appear in high-motion areas on the face. Frequent muscle activity tends to break down fillers more quickly, but these options are designed to hold out against routine motion, whether they are addressing nasolabial folds (RHA® 2), more severe creases (RHA® 3), or volume loss that alters facial contours (RHA® 4).

Beyond Dermal Fillers: Other Wrinkle Injections and Skin Treatments

Along with the dermal fillers available from Nashville Plastic Surgery Institute, we also provide wrinkle injections called neurotoxins or neuromodulators. These neuromodulators contain botulinum toxin type A and temporarily prevent the muscle contractions that cause expression wrinkles. Options include BOTOX®, Dysport®, and Jeuveau and can be used in combination with fillers.

Laser resurfacing, IPL, and chemical peels are other treatments that enhance the pigmentation and texture of the skin by encouraging cell turnover and collagen production.
