Saline implants can be inserted through shorter and smaller incisions. Silicone implants are made of a silicone shell and are pre-filled with silicone gel. Newer generations of silicone implants are often referred to as “gummy bear” implants because of the solid-state gel inside of them. Gummy bear implants are said to have a more natural texture and also pose less of a risk of leakage since they hold their shape if punctured.
Silicone implants are inserted pre-filled and typically require a larger incision than saline implants. These implants are available to patients who are at least 21 years of age.

There have historically been two shapes available: round and teardrop (also known as “anatomical”).
